Tale of Silver Hoof

When he was sixty years old Pavel Bazhov (1879-1950) wrote a collection of interesting stories, based on Ural Mountains miners and stoneworkers legends, entitled "The Malachite Casket - Tales from Urals". There are fifty-two tales in this collections.
This tale relates how a lonely old woman adopts a girl, an orphan, telling her that in winter he hunts a goat with antlers like a deer, in order to see where it stamps its hoof. Intrigued, the girl and her cat move in with him, she doing the cleaning and cooking, and the cat catching mice. She learns that the goat has a silver hoof, and each time it stamps produces a jewel. When she is alone Silver Hoof jumps upon the roof, and each time it stamps it produces a shower of jewels before disappearing with the cat.
