Town of Vladimir and the village of Bogolyubovo

Founded in 1108 by Prince Vladimir Monomakh the city has born its name to this day. In 1157 Prince Andrey Bogolyubsky (loved by God) transferred the capital of his principality to Vladimir, which resulted in the construction magnificent buildings in the city.
The most well known architectural monuments is the Golden Gates built in 1159-64 and rebuilt in 18-19th centuries. Other important city monuments are the Cathedral of the Assumption (1158-60), St Dmitry Cathedral (1194-97) where fragments of Andrey Rublyov painting have survived, and a number of urban buildings and mansions built in the 19yh century.

The village of Bogolyubovo now is the suburb of Vladimir. There is an ancient monastery, which has recently resumed its activity. The palace and the whole architectural ensemble of the Bogolyubovo castle (12th c.) are a masterpiece of ancient Russian architecture. The world famous Intercession Church on the River of Nerl (1165) is one of the flood meadow 1.5 km from Bogolyubovo.
